Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has started an investigation into the matter. This information is known from some documents published in a report of the US Parliament Congress. The FTC is already investigating social media companies’ privacy and cybersecurity practices and is seeking internal communications.
The FTC has been monitoring Twitter for the past few years. In 2011, the social media company complied with an order alleging data security flaws in its systems. However, on 27 October 2022, Elon Musk bought Twitter. After this deal, the concern of US investigative agencies increased.

FTC response
In response to the House report, the FTC said, “Protecting consumer privacy is what the FTC should do. It’s no surprise that commission staff are closely scrutinizing Twitter’s compliance with the consent order, which went into effect long before Musk bought the company.
Twitter has paid a fine of 1.2 thousand crore rupees
Twitter paid a fine of $150 million (about Rs 1,230 crore) in May for violating a 2011 consent order, nearly five months before Musk’s acquisition. An updated version created new processes that require companies to implement an improved privacy-protection program as well as strengthen information security.

Questions raised in November
But in November, a group of Democratic senators led by Democrat Leena Khan questioned that promise. He asked the FTC to investigate potential violations stemming from the Twitter Discord report and the security risks posed by Mask’s massive layoffs.
The FTC said at the time that it was “monitoring recent developments on Twitter with deep concern.”
