It has only happened once in the history of IPL so far, when a team has made the biggest bid of the season and also won the title.

The IPL started in 2008 and since then many franchises have made record bids for many players, but call it bad luck or something else, whichever franchise made the biggest bid of the season, did not win the title that season. This time Punjab Kings bought Sam Karan for the biggest bid in history for Rs 18.50 crore.

In 2008, Chennai Super Kings made the biggest bid of that season on MS Dhoni and in 2008, CSK finished second. The following season, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai made the biggest bids for Pietersen and Flintoff, and in 2010, Kolkata Knight Riders made the biggest bids for Shane Bond and Kieron Pollard for Mumbai Indians.

In 2011, KKR bought Gautab Gambhir, in 2012, CSK bought Ravindra Jadeja and in 2013, Mumbai opened their vaults for Glenn Maxwell and 2013 was the first time a team won after making the biggest bid of the season.

After that the story starts again there. Yuvraj Singh received the biggest bid for 2 consecutive seasons in 2014 and 2015. After that, Bangalore spent money on Watson in 2016, but neither turned out to be a winner.

In 2017, Rising Pune Giants and in 2018, Rajasthan Royals made the biggest bid of the season on Ben Stokes and both teams missed out on the title. In 2019, Rajasthan bought Jaydev Unadkat and Kings XI Punjab bought Varun Chakraborty for a huge price.

The process of facing defeat continued even after making the most expensive purchase of the season. Pat Cummins, Chris Morris and Ishan Kishan set record prices, but the trio's team conditions were poor that season.
