Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri leaves GST cable Shigufa

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri leaves Shigufa from time to time. He said the central government is all set to bring petrol and diesel under Goods and Services Tax (GST). But at the same time he added that it can be done if the state governments are ready for it, the Center has no problem. They know that the state governments will not be ready because after the implementation of GST, the central government has got the right to collect all the taxes. States have the right to levy excise tax only on petroleum products. Even so, the highest tax is received from petroleum. So, no state government will prepare for it.

Hardeep Puri knows this thing, so he said to put dust in people’s eyes that petroleum products can be brought under GST if the state wants. The reality is that the Center is never ready for this. The Center gets over Rs 3 lakh crore in revenue every year from heavy excise duty. If the government was really prepared, there would have been no delay in its implementation. Center can take initiatives for this if it wants. Everything is in his hands. Even when it comes to voting in the GST Council, the Center will have the upper hand as it has the most important voting rights and most states are ruled by the BJP or its direct and indirect allies. Most of the earlier tax levies or tax hikes have been initiated by the Center itself, but in the case of petroleum, the central government is playing on behalf of the states.
