Chief minister Nitish Kumar Tejashwi Yadav has no views on JD(U) and RJD

Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JDU are at odds over the Chief Minister post in Bihar. Nitish Kumar recently said that Tejashwi Yadav will lead the Grand Alliance in 2025. Nitish said this in front of RJD leader and state Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav but neither Tejashwi nor his party reacted to it. Earlier, Nitish Kumar had said that Tejashwi will look after the development work of Bihar. At first glance, this appears to be Nitish’s wish, but RJD leaders see it as a ploy to postpone Tejashwi’s coronation for another three years.

RJD leaders want Nitish Kumar to leave the post of Chief Minister now and join the 2024 strategy. RJD state president Jagdanand Singh said very clearly that to achieve big things one has to give up small things. What he wanted to say was that to become the Prime Minister, Nitish Kumar had to vacate the post of Chief Minister. Other RJD leaders also said that if Nitish were to contest the prime ministerial post from the opposition, he should hand over command of the state to Tejashwi and work for coordination with opposition parties across the country.

But Nitish and his party are aware of its dangers. Nothing will be certain if the chief minister’s position in the state gets out of hand. Nitish feels that if he makes Tejashwi, the leader of a party with 80 MLAs, as Chief Minister, Nitish and his party will soon be out of usefulness. The post of chief minister is keeping Nitish’s party together. Along with Congress and Left parties, RJD reached majority. It is also feared that there may be a split in Nitish’s party after leaving the post of Chief Minister. Some MLAs may go to RJD and some to BJP.

Even if the party does not break, Nitish’s political weight will decrease if he steps down from the post of Chief Minister. Being the Chief Minister, he is in a better position to bargain with other opposition parties and the Congress. Leaders of other opposition parties who want to become prime ministerial candidates before the next Lok Sabha elections are all chief ministers. Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister of West Bengal and K Chandrasekhar Rao is the Chief Minister of Telangana. Arvind Kejriwal is the Chief Minister of Delhi and his party also has the government in Punjab. That is why JDU leaders want Nitish to remain in the post till 2024 Lok Sabha elections and become prime ministerial challenger. RJD, on the other hand, is of the view that if the prime ministerial dream is not fulfilled in 2024, Nitish will not step down as chief minister till the end of 2025 and then who knows what will happen in the elections or what Nitish Kumar will do. Do it later. You know!
