The Janata government saw it as an opportunity to celebrate the end of the emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. So launched a government cold drink called ‘Double 7’. However, Double 7’s performance was not much in the presence of current players like Campa Cola and Thumbs Up. Moreover, the fall of the Janata government and the return to power of Indira Gandhi proved to be the last nail in the coffin of Double 7.

How did Campa Cola arise?

Until market liberalization, Campa Cola dominated Indian consumers. The soft drink was developed by the Pure Drinks Group in the 1970s. Earlier Pure Drinks used to make Coca-Cola along with Coke. The drink originated in 1949, but after Coke’s exit from the market in the 1970s, Pure Drinks launched ‘Campa Cola’ with Campa Beverages Pvt Ltd in the absence of foreign players. The brand’s slogan ‘The Great Indian Taste’ became very popular and conveyed a message of nationalism. The brand flourished during that time but began to fade in the 1990s. In 2000–2001 its office and bottling plant in Delhi was closed and the company continued to manufacture a handful of bottles under the brand in Haryana.

Coke-Pepsi will give tough competition

The acquisition of soft drinks by Reliance Retail Ventures has given Cold Drink another chance to compete against its old rival Coca-Cola and other brands with strong support again. There is another reason too. Since the Modi government came to power in the country, words like nationalism have gained momentum again. Slogans like Make in India have tried to bring many domestic products back on track. In such a scenario, Reliance’s move could spell trouble for companies like Coke and PepsiCo.
